Prayer Flags In India, prayers and drawings are carved meticulously into wood slabs that last until use, moisture and termites earn them retirement. The prayers are printed onto cloth squares and hang like forgotten laundry, to snap in the wind, stiffen after the rains and fade in the sun. Their exposure to the elements is tattered evidence that the thoughts and offerings invoked in the form of proscribed Buddhist text have gone heavenward – that the message has been delivered, the ragged messenger is spent, and the supplicant is linked with the invisible and all powerful Beyond. |
